Checklist for Fire Safety

Smoke Alarm Safety

  • Install smoke alarms near every bedroom and on every floor of the home or building.
  • Test each smoke alarm on a monthly basis to ensure they are all functioning properly.
  • Change the batteries every 6 months in all smoke alarms through out the home.
  • Any smoke alarms that exceed 10 years in age should be replaced with an up-to-date model.


  • Heating Safety

  • Make sure your chimney and furnace are professionally serviced every year.
  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet clear of flammable objects such as drapes, furniture, clothes and towels.
  • The fireplace should have a top-quality, sturdy screen to catch sparks and any logs that may fall out.


  • Safety in the Kitchen and while Cooking

  • Do not leave the kitchen when the stove is on and food is cooking.
  • Turn pot and pan holders inward while cooking to avoid accidental spillage and knocking off of stove.
  • Keep hand towels, oven mitts and other flammable objects away from burners and oven.
  • Always have a fully charged fire extinguisher in the kitchen and make sure everyone in the family knows how to use it.


  • Additional Fire Safety

  • Practice on a regular basis, a fire escape plan at different times of the day and night.
  • Always douse cigar and cigarette butts with water before placing them in the garbage.
  • Never leave lit candles or a burning fireplace unattended.
  • Be careful not to overload electrical outlets, extension cords and power strips.
  • Regularly inspect all cords and wires for damage, wear and cover all unused electrical outlets.
  • Keep a fully charged fire extinguisher near each exit.
